About
The Full Story
Katy Wilson’s path to winemaking began at an early age on her family’s walnut orchard in
California’s Central Valley. Working alongside her parents, Katy learned to drive a tractor, weld, and developed a strong appreciation for the land, building the foundation for her future in winemaking.
When Katy arrived at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for college, she was quickly introduced to
viticulture. She was fascinated by viticulture’s ability to intersect science, creativity, and
community into one. She discovered that wine is not like other areas of agriculture - it is a unique blend of science and art. Katy went on to double-major in Agriculture Business and Wine & Viticulture, and at just 18 she landed her first job in the industry not too far from home at a vineyard in the Central Valley. She then took her winemaking journey abroad, gaining experience in Australia, New Zealand, and Napa before landing her first full-time role at Flowers Vineyard & Winery on the Sonoma Coast.
Katy’s winemaking philosophy is rooted in letting each vineyard shine. Working closely with
vineyards that are farmed organically, every vintage is a new opportunity to adapt and respond to the season’s conditions. Katy’s tenured experience has honed her belief that every wine she makes is distinctive, and carries the impact of its place and time.
Today, Katy serves as the Director of Winemaking for both Reeve and BloodRoot Wines, while also bringing her expertise as the winemaker for Anaba Wines and Smith Story Wine Cellars. With a diverse portfolio and a hands-on approach, she continues to shape some of California's most compelling wines.
Katy lives in Napa with her husband David, their daughter Charlie, and their dog Nico. She is the founder and winemaker of LaRue Wines—a highly regarded boutique label focused on small-lot Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast, reflecting her personal vision and dedication to exceptional winemaking. In 2021, Katy and David expanded their portfolio with the launch of Charlie LaRue Wines—named in honor of their daughter—which features premium Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
